My firm specializes in helping people who have seat belt injuries or were injured as a result of seat belt failures, and what we see is that many of the auto manufactures actually have component part manufacturer supply them with seat belts, and many times those seat belts are properly tested or they are properly engineered to be specifically safe with the vehicle in which they are installed. Another large area where we represent plaintiffs in our practice is with childhood seat belt injuries. For years, the Federal Government has allowed the auto manufacturers to sell vehicles that had seat belt systems that were only designed for people of 100 pounds and more in weight. The problem is that in children 4 to 10 years old, who are the usually the occupants of the rear seats of vehicles, they often weigh less than 100 pounds, and because of that, they suffer very serious injuries since the seat belt systems whether they are just a lap belt or even a lap and shoulder are not designed for their height and weight.
