The vehicles that are most prone to gas tank explosions obviously are vehicles where the gas tanks are placed closer to the outside of the vehicle, closer to the sheet metal where there is a greater chance that they will be dramatically disfigured and in some cases ruptured during an automobile accident. We, as trial lawyers, have been working for years to try to get the Federal Government tighten up its standards for gas tanks and gas tank placement and gas tank rigidity, and unfortunately the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards are still very lax in terms of what the auto manufacturers must do with testing in the way in which they must ensure that cars will not explode or not leak gas in the event of an accident.
