Ventura County, CA – Child Dies after Brutal Collision between Car and Tanker Truck on Eastbound Highway 118 near Balcom Canyon Road

Ventura County, CA (August 12, 2018) – A Ventura local news source recently provided updated information concerning the child who died as the result of a brutal collision between a car and a tanker truck that took place along the eastbound lanes of Highway 118 near Balcom Canyon Road, between the areas of Moorpark and Somis. Officials first documented the accident at approximately 7:50 AM in the morning on Friday, August 10, 2018.

As of today, the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the deceased victim as 9-year old Ruben Arroyo. At this time, No details about the 45-year old Somis woman and her 7-year old daughter, who had been riding in the same vehicle as Arroyo, as well as the 65-year old Los Angeles man involved in the crash has been revealed.

Based on the report from the California Highway Patrol, the 45-year old woman had been driving a 2014 Chevrolet Impala, also occupied by her children, south on Highway 118. Meanwhile, the 65-year old Los Angeles man was driving a Peterbilt double-tanker truck westbound down the same route. Officials reported the truck was hauling a load of 8,000 gallons of gasoline.

At some point, the woman attempted to turn left in the direction of Moorpark when, without warning, the oncoming Peterbilt plowed into the sedan’s left side. In seconds, both vehicles slid out of control and careened across the intersection on 118.

CHP officers sadly confirmed that Arroyo, who had been a backseat passenger in the Impala, died at a nearby hospital.

Meanwhile, the mother and her daughter were brought to Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks for treatment.

At the same time, medical personnel took the truck driver to St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital in Camarillo, where he received treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

As a result of the impact, an approximation of 1,000 to 1,200 gallons of gasoline spilled out of the tanker and onto the highway. Authorities are still investigating a possible cause of this deadly crash.

We extend our most heartfelt prayers and our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ruben Arroyo and wish them strength and peace of mind during this tragic, difficult time.
