Encinitas, CA – 72-year-old Florida Resident Killed in Fatal DUI Crash on I-5
Encinitas, CA (March 9, 2019) – A fatal suspected DUI crash on Interstate 5 near San Elijo Lagoon left one victim dead and another being arrested at about 1:15 a.m., March 8th.
A 2008 Nissan Frontier pickup slid off the northbound side of the freeway and slammed into a 2018 Hyundai Elantra sedan. The sedan was parked on the right-hand shoulder near Manchester Avenue. It is unknown if the victim had pulled over because of car trouble or another reason.
The accident left the driver of the Hyundai, a 72-year-old man from Florida, fatally injured. He was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased due to trauma sustained. The victim’s name has been withheld, pending notification of next-of-kin.
The driver of the truck was identified as 42-year-old Dean Bednarczyk, of Oceanside. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI and was also taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital for fractured ribs and other injuries.
