San Bernardino County, CA – Motorcycle Crash Injures 3, Matthew Mercier Arrested

San Bernardino County, CA (March 11, 2019) – A suspected drunk driver was involved in a motorcycle crash with an automobile outside Fontana on March 10th, at 4:15 pm.

The CHP reported that the crash took place on Arrow Route and Cottonwood Avenue. Rancho Cucamonga resident Matthew Mercier, 31, drove a grey 2017 Toyota Camry and hit a curb after losing control of his vehicle. The Camry then hit three motorcyclists when it veered into the westbound side of the street.

Mercer was hospitalized for minor injuries after being arrested at the scene for suspicion of DUI.

The motorcycle riders all sustained injuries, with a 23-year-old male suffering major injuries, a 24-year-old male suffering moderate injuries, and the third, another 23-year-old male, sustaining minor injuries.

An investigation is ongoing.

We are keeping those injured in this accident in our thoughts and wish them quick recoveries.

Crashes Involving Motorcycles and Cars in California

In the case discussed above, all three motorcyclists were wearing helmets. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, wearing helmets saved 1,859 motorcyclists’ lives in 2016. No matter how many precautions motorcycle riders take, however, they are more vulnerable on the road than automobile drivers.

Motorcycle riders do not have the protection of a metal body around their vehicle, as automobile drivers do. Because of that reason, motorcycle drivers are much more likely to be injured or killed in a crash with a car.

California has more motorcycle drivers within its limits than any other state, meaning California is the state leading in motorcycle accidents. All drivers in California are required to look out for their fellow motorists no matter what type of vehicle they are driving. Everyone on the road must remain alert at all times. When a driver takes to the road while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, they put themselves and all other drivers–car, truck, and motorcycle drivers alike–at risk.
