Avenal, CA – Serious Injuries in Crash on Highway 198

Avenal, CA (March 22, 2019) – The California Highway Patrol is investigating an accident involving a stolen vehicle. The crash occurred around 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 20^th, on Highway 198.

An unknown person driving a stolen 2004 Dodge Durango moved into oncoming lanes for reasons that remain unclear. The driver crashed the right side of a westbound 2005 Toyota, driven by 40-year-old Javier Rodriguez Gaytan.

The stolen vehicle landed on its side in a field after rolling over. The driver fled from the scene. Despite a search of the area, the driver was not located.

Gaytan reportedly suffered from major injuries. He was flown to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno for treatment.

The CHP reported that the cause of the accident is unknown at this time. Whether or not the driver of the stolen vehicle was under the influence of drugs is also unknown.

An investigation into the crash is underway.
