Causes of Bicycle Accidents
People are using bicycles more and more not only for recreation but also for commuting to school and work. However, more bikes on the road mean more bicycle accidents which have also increased in severity.
Bicycle accident arises from a variety of situations:
- Cars drifting into bike lanes;
- Driver not being aware when pulling in or out of a parking space;
- “Dooring” accidents;
- Pedestrians hitting cyclists;
- Crosswalk accidents; and
- Hit-and-runs.
In California, bikers and drivers are both afforded the same rights to use the roadways – even when there are no bike lanes. Drivers need to give bikes the same right of way as other vehicles.
