Hat Creek, CA- Two Injured at Hwy 89 & Hwy 299 Intersection in Big Rig Crash
Hat Creek, CA (May 10, 2019)- A multi-vehicle accident involving three big rigs and a bus carrying students occurred on Tuesday in Hat Creek around seven miles southeast of Highway 89 and Highway 299 junction.
The California Highway Patrol reported that the chain-reaction crash began at approximately 4 pm when the bus stopped to drop off students south of Lava Flat Lane. A semi-truck with two other trucks behind it slowed for the stopped bus and flashed its rear warning lights. Unfortunately, the two additional trailers were not able to brake fast enough and crashed together.
A Walmart semi-truck with a 53-foot trailer, a fully-loaded trailer from British Columbia, Canada and a third tractor-trailer without current identification available were involved in the collision. Officials are investigating which truck originally stopped for the bus.
Additional factors under investigation include the speed of the trucks and why they were unable to brake fast enough to avoid crashing.
The CHP report stated that Keith’s Towing responded to the scene at approximately 6 pm with heavy-duty wreckers to remove the damaged trucks. Damage to the trucks included front-end and radiator damage, with one truck undrivable.
Though the crash involved three large trucks, the CHP was able to direct traffic around the damaged vehicles, making the closure of the road unnecessary.
Luckily, despite the involvement of three semi-trucks and a bus carrying students, there were few injuries in the crash. Two of the truck drivers received minor injuries that did not require substantial medical attention.
The crash is under continuing investigation.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for full recoveries.
Facts About Tractor-Trailers in California
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration reported in 2017 that 361 fatalities took place in California due to accidents with large trucks such as semi-trucks or tractor-trailers. Due to the vast weight and size difference between these large vehicles and an ordinary car, a crash between the two is likely to result in great damage to the car, as well as its driver and passengers.
