South Gate, CA- Suspected Street Race Kills Four on I-70 at Firestone Blvd
South Gate, CA (May 22, 2019)- The California Highway Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle crash that took place on Wednesday at approximately 3:15 am, resulting in four deaths.
The crash happened on the 710 Freeway near Firestone Boulevard. According to CHP Sgt. Jason Lopez, skid marks at the site of the crash, as well as witness reports, showed that the crash occurred when the vehicles were driving at high speed. While the cause of the accident is still under investigation, witnesses said that the cars were involved in a street race prior to crashing.
The force of the crash caused one of the vehicles, a BMW, to hit and wrap around a pole while another vehicle hit a wall on the freeway’s shoulder.
Four people died at the scene of the crash. Their names have not been released.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the families of the deceased at this time. Our thoughts are with them.
California’s Street Racing Culture
California is known for its street racing culture. With long, straight, wide-open roads and the popularity of powerful cars, many people engage in this dangerous practice. In events such as “takeovers” in southern California and “sideshows” in northern California, participants create deadly situations for participants, spectators, and innocent drivers just trying to get to their destinations safely.
According to the Los Angeles Times, 179 people have died in street racing-related car crashes between 2000 and 2017.
