Tarzana, CA – RV Involved in Police Chase Crashes Near Tampa Ave and Wells Dr

Tarzana, CA (May 23, 2019) – The California Highway Patrol reported a police chase involving a recreational vehicle that ended in a crash near Tampa Avenue and Wells Drive.

The incident began at approximately 7:00 p.m. when officials attempted to pull over a suspected stolen RV on Towsley Canyon Road in Santa Clarita. Rather than pull over, the driver of the RV continued into traffic at high speed.

In the course of the chase, the RV struck a black vehicle near the 101 Freeway off-ramp near Tampa Avenue. The RV driver did not stop at the site of the crash but drove until losing control, crashing into a sedan, and hitting a tree near Tampa Avenue and Wells Drive.

Following the collision, the female driver attempted to flee on foot. She was apprehended by authorities while attempting to scale a fence. The CHP report states that she was treated for unknown injuries at the crash site.

One occupant in the sedan that the RV struck was injured and found on his back in a residential driveway near the crash site. Emergency medical personnel took him to a local hospital for treatment of unknown injuries.

Several dogs were involved in the incident, one of which appeared to be injured following the crash. Two dogs were reportedly in the RV as the police chase commenced. One dog jumped from the RV in the Winnetka area near the intersection of Victory Boulevard and Topham Street. This dog ran away from the road without any apparent injuries.

A second dog was also noted in the RV’s front seat. Following the crash, the dog ran after the driver as she fled the scene. At the time of the crash, the dog appeared to be injured and ran with a limp.

Following the crash, Simi Valley Police Cmdr. Ritchie Lew noted that, while the RV was suspected stolen prior to the police pursuit, it was later found to have been purchased in Downey at Giant RV with the use of stolen identification.

The incident and crash are under investigation.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for a full recovery.
