First Steps After A California Car Crash
What should you do after a car accident? When it occurs, injuries may be harsh and adrenaline high. Despite this, there are important things to do at the scene.
- Never leave the accident scene until it’s suitable to do so.
- Make sure everyone involved in the accident is either uninjured or getting medical attention.
- Call the Police. Ask for a police report and get the name and badge numbers of the responding officers.
- Get information from all drivers involved – Names, numbers, addresses, drivers’ license numbers, license plate numbers, and basic insurance.
- Don’t apologize. It might not be clear who was at fault.
- Ask any witnesses what they saw and get their information.
- Tell your insurance company you’ve been in a crash.
- Note any medical professionals that you get treatment from. Record the treatments and/or medications you get. Also, ask for copies of all medical reports and bills.
- Take photos of any damage to your vehicle as soon as possible.
- Obtain your insurance company’s damage valuation. Get independent repair estimates or replacement quotes if you are unhappy with your vehicle’s valuation.
- Don’t discuss the accident to anyone other than your lawyer, your insurance company, and the police.
- Be careful if you’re offered an early settlement from an insurance company. Don’t settle until you know you’ll be fully compensated.
If anyone was injured in the crash, it’s a smart idea to consult an experienced attorney. An attorney can help you maximize your recovery if you’re injured or better defend yourself if you’re at fault.
