Pileup Accidents In California Are Common – and Deadly
All car accidents are hazardous, scary, and nerve-racking, and the more cars that are entangled, the more harmful a crash becomes. More than 6 million car accidents happen every year, and of those incidents, between one-third and half of them are pileup crashes.
Even smaller pileups offer up their own unique dangers. Some of the reasons behind why multivehicle collisions are so dangerous include the following:
- Higher risk of injury — Multiple collisions mean more opportunities for injury, especially when the pileup occurs at high speeds.
- Fires — Pileups often cause more significant vehicle damage, which in turn increases the risk of a fire. In addition, pileup crashes sometimes leave multiple vehicles pushed up against each other, which can lead to people being trapped inside their cars.
- Emergency vehicles being blocked — On busy roads, emergency vehicles can take longer to arrive on the scene. These delays can worsen injuries and even induce fatalities.
- Drivers and passengers leaving their vehicles — People tend to get out of their vehicles in these types of crashes, either because they are dazed or because they want to check out the damage. This is dangerous as this leaves people outside of their vehicles at a higher risk of being hit by another vehicle not involved in the crash.
