Truck Versus Motorcycle Accidents In California

A motorcycle driver is almost 40 times more likely to die in a motor vehicle accident than a truck driver in the same situation. In fact, truckers make up only about six percent of fatalities. Crashes between tractor-trailers and motorcycles are horrific because motorcycles are smaller, have almost no protection, and are often moving at high rates of speed.

In terms of visibility, a truck and a motorcycle are in two different worlds. A two-wheeled bike is small and fast, which makes it hard to see. A semi-truck is a huge vehicle, often weighing up to 80,000 pounds and being nearly 60 feet long. They are truly impossible to miss.

Trucks versus motorcycle crashes are often fatal. During training, commercial truck drivers are taught to pay special attention to motorcycle drivers traveling near their truck. As well, motorcycle drivers are encouraged to stay out of the truck’s blind spot.

Here are some basic rules of the road.

  • Motorcycles can sometimes appear farther away than they actually are
  • Stay aware of blind spots
  • Motorcycles can also stop faster than a big truck
  • Follow all traffic signs
  • Allow other drivers to pass as they change lanes.
  • Trucks often appear closer than they really are
