Snelling, CA – Motorcyclist And Passenger Killed In Head-On Collision on Hornitos Rd. And Robinson Rd.
Snelling, CA (June 15, 2019) – A multi-vehicle accident involving a motorcycle occurred on June 14 at about 11:10 a.m., that took the life of two people.
California Highway Patrol responded to the scene of this fatal accident. According to CHP officers, the crash occurred in the area of Hornitos Rd. and Robinson Rd.
A 71-year-old man and his female passenger who is believed to be between 15 and 25 years old were driving southbound on Hornitos Rd., north of Robinson Rd., on a 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle, when it tried to pass a 2014 Toyota RAV4 driven by 61-year-old Merced resident Christine Marie Vanloon. The incident took place on a double yellow line section of road.
As the motorcycle attempted to pass the RAV4, it sideswiped a 2013 Chevrolet pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction and hauling a utility trailer, driven by 34-year-old Lewis Conway Prock of Denair.
The motorcycle traveled back into the southbound lane, where it collided with the Toyota. Both motorcycle riders were ejected from their bike.
Emergency responders were called to the scene to render aid. Sadly, the two riders were pronounced dead at the scene.
We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the victim who passed away as a result of this fatal accident. Our thoughts are with them at this time.
Lane Splitting Safety In California
Lane splitting happens when a motorcycle travels between two lanes of stopped or slow moving vehicles. If an accident happens while a motorcycle is lane splitting, the fault depends on the actions of the motorist and motorcyclist before the crash.
If you are going to lane split you need to do it safely. This is your best defense.
- While lane splitting, stay safe by:
- Be aware of cars all around you.
- Turn your headlights on and don reflective clothing.
- Move into the area where you plan to lane split carefully – wait until both lanes of cars are at the same speed.
- Be super careful when driving in a car’s blind spot.
- Travel at a speed only somewhat faster than the flow of traffic. Don’t speed.
- Be aware of signs that a car may be changing lanes. Look and see if the driver is looking into the rearview or side view mirrors.
- Honk if cars are too close together.
- When traffic moves to about 30 mph, move back into the lane.
