The Epidemic of Truck Accidents In California
Road crashes are expected to become the fifth leading cause of death in the United States by the year 2030. That’s pretty scary. As well, among the deaths in 2014, 3,660 were created by an accident with a big rig or a bus. Sixty-eight percent of these fatalities were passengers in a car, while 15 percent were bicyclists, motorcyclists or pedestrians.
By big rigs, we mean 18-wheelers, cement trucks, coal trucks, buses, and other similar vehicles. 72 percent of truck accidents that resulted in fatalities in 2014 involved these kinds of vehicles. Tractor-trailers are some of the most dangerous vehicles out there that are driving next to you.
There are many causes of truck accidents. One is the weight and stopping distance of a big truck. A tractor-trailer can weigh 40 tons and it takes much longer to stop.
According to the Large Truck Crash Causation Study:
- Twenty-seven percent of trucks had brake issues
- Nineteen percent of drivers didn’t know the route they were driving
- 10 percent of truck drivers were stressed and under pressure
- Seven percent were fatigued
- Three percent had tire issues
- Five percent were aggressively driving
- One percent were sick
- 0.4 percent were under the influence of drugs
- 0.3 percent were under the influence of alcohol
