San Jose, CA – Santa Clara Officials Identify Two Victims Killed During Violent Collision with VTA Light Rail Train at Lincoln and Auzerais Avenues
San Jose, CA (August 2, 2018) – Santa Clara officials have provided updated information about one of the two victims who was killed during a violent collision between a car and a VTA light rail train at the junction of Lincoln and Auzerais Avenues. The incident occurred at approximately 12:34 PM in the afternoon on Sunday, July 8, 2018. As of today, the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the first victim as 60-year old San Jose resident David Holt. As explained, no detailed information concerning the second fatality or additional people involved in the collision has been revealed at this time.
According to the initial police report, Holt had been driving a gold Buick Regal when, at some point in the afternoon, he wove around the crossing arms on a railroad track. Without warning, a Santa Clara VTA light-rail train, heading in the northbound direction, plowed into the Buick. Medical personnel confirmed Holt and the second victim, his passenger, had died during the impact.
As a result of the crash, the train was shoved off the main track. Passengers did not sustain injuries.
Presently, the San Jose Police Department has assumed authority over the ongoing investigation into this tragic incident.
We extend our most heartfelt prayers and deepest condolences to the families and friends of Mr. David Holt and his passenger and wish them peace of mind and security during this difficult, tragic time.
Car and Train Collision in San Jose
Given the circumstances, officials are unsure of the reasons why Mr. Holt crossed the railroad tracks as the train approached along Lincoln and Auzerais. As the investigation continues, forensic teams will inspect the wrecked Buick and examine photos of the crash site to determine if mechanical issues or system failure possibly forced the vehicle to swerve out of control. Likewise, officials will consider if the driver had consumed alcohol or drugs prior to operating the vehicle or had simply failed to comply with established traffic laws.
Depending on the final case results, the members of Holt’s and the second passenger’s families can potentially file a wrongful death lawsuit and, ultimately receive compensation for multiple inconvenient circumstances ranging from funeral expenses to the tragic loss of a loved one.
