Moreno Valley, CA – Update: Pedestrian Identified in Hit and Run Accident on Frontage Rd
Moreno Valley, CA (November 30, 2018) – On Monday night, Old 215 Frontage Road saw a hit and run accident that resulted in the death of pedestrian Amber Alvarez, a 36-year-old woman from Moreno Valley.
According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Alvarez was struck by an oncoming vehicle on Old 215 Frontage Road. The fire department and paramedics arrived promptly on the scene but Alvarez, who was already suffering from catastrophic injuries, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The driver of the car did not stop and render aid, as required by California law. Instead, they chose to flee the scene. The suspect, a 53-year-old man named Phillip Jermaine Jones of Moreno Valley was later found and arrested by police. He was booked into Robert Presley Detention Center on suspicion of a hit and run involving serious injury or death.
The investigation into this accident is still ongoing at this time.
Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Amber Alvarez, who tragically lost her life in this pedestrian accident. Our hearts go out to them and we hope that they are able to find some comfort and peace as they begin to grieve her incredible loss.
Pedestrian Deaths in California
Pedestrian deaths are becoming a growing problem in the state of California. Between 2004 and 2013, the amount of pedestrians involved in traffic fatalities has increased from 11% to 14%. The majority of pedestrian deaths from car accidents take place:
- At dusk or after dark, when pedestrians are less visible
- In collisions with passenger vehicles (cars, pickup trucks, and SUVs)
- In urban areas, where pedestrians are more likely to be crossing the road
- Away from intersections
Roughly one-third of all pedestrians who are killed in car crashes have a blood alcohol level of at least .08% (the legal limit), and about 15% of drivers who are responsible for the death of pedestrians in traffic accidents also have a blood alcohol level of .08% or higher.
