Rancho Mirage, CA (December 14, 2018) On the morning of December 14th, a fatal bicycle accident happened at the intersection of Ramon and Rattler roads. According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, a vehicle struck a 32-year-old bicyclist named William Campbell. Campbell and the vehicle both traveled eastbound when the accident happened at about 6:51 a.m. When emergency responders arrived at the scene, Campbell had already suffered fatal injuries. We send our condolences to Campbell’s family as we know it’s never easy to lose a loved one, especially in a bicycle accident that could have been avoided.
Bicycle Accidents in California
Although bicycles are not considered vehicles, the rules of the road still apply to them, which means drivers must respect bicyclists as they respect other vehicles. Unfortunately, almost 1,000 bicycle accidents still occur in California every year. Most of time these accidents occur when drivers fail to check their blind spots, make turns turns in front of bicyclists, sideswipe them, or open doors in front of them. Whenever drivers aren’t in their right state of mind due to alcohol consumption or fatigue, they put bicyclists at a huge risk of being seriously injured or killed.
The police are currently investigating this accident to determine causation and liability. If the driver is considered fully liable, then Campbell’s family could file a wrongful death lawsuit with the help of a California wrongful death attorney.
