Health Benefits of Organic Meat and Milk
Newcastle University has recently produced two new studies that both confirmed the various benefits of consuming organic milk and organic meat. The British Journal of Nutrition has published both of these sets of findings which both state that organic milk and organic meat have levels of the healthy, beneficial Omega-3 fatty acids that are nearly 50% higher than in those found in milk and meat from traditional factory farm conditions. Organic meat was also found to have a lower concentration of two types of saturated fats (bad fats). 40% more of the heart-healthy chemical known as conjugated linoleic acid was also found in the organically produced milk and subsequently produced dairy products. Beneficial increases in the amounts of antioxidants and nutritional minerals such as Vitamin E, selenium, iron, and carotenoids, were also discovered in organic milk. These published studies are said to be some of the most groundbreaking of all studies that support the consumption of organic meat and organic dairy because of new, state of the art, technologies that were used by the scientists who conducted them.
The Importance of Omega Fatty Acids
One of the most promising findings of these studies was the substantially higher amount of Omega-3 fatty acids found in both eat meat and the dairy products. This is significant because human diets that are low in these Omega-3 fatty acids, especially when combined with a diet that is high in Omega-6 fatty acids, which includes the standard Western diet, is one of the major risk factors for chronic inflammation, cancer, autoimmune diseases, and cardiovascular disease. Diets in the reverse, however, that is diets with high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids and very low levels of Omega-6 fatty acids, are known to assist in suppressing each of these conditions. One study found that a diet high in Omega-3s and low in Omega-6s actually helped patients with rheumatoid arthritis by reducing inflammation, helped patients with asthma by reducing the severity of the attacks, and reduced overall mortality rates in those patients suffering from cardiovascular disease. Other studies have even been able to show the link between this type of diet and improved eye health, along with a decreased risk for dementia and for breast cancer. The Newcastle studies suggest that one of the best ways for people to adjust their fatty acid levels away from what they are on the standard Western diet and back into a more healthy range is to switch from conventional factory farm raised meat and dairy products over to strictly organic meat and dairy products.
Additional Benefits of Eating Organic Meat and Dairy
The increased Omega-3 levels are not the only benefit of eating organic meat and dairy products. One completed study involved antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This study showed that samples of bacteria that were collected from conventional herds were far more resistant to antibiotics than were the bacteria samples collected from organic herds. This means that a substantially increased amount antibiotics must be fed to the herd in order to keep them even marginally healthy until milking or slaughter. Those extreme levels of antibiotics are then passed on to the consumer, making it difficult for a doctor’s prescribed antibiotics to work when you need them. When the scientists examined different meats, such as chicken and pork, the antibiotic levels contained in those meats were even higher than in the cattle. In addition to this, the use of any growth hormones or pesticides is strictly forbidden in organically grown meat or dairy so you can be assured that when you eat only organic you are avoiding plaguing your internal organs with tons of harmful, synthetic chemicals.
