Santa Barbara County, CA – CHP Officer Injured in Car Accident on Highway 101

Santa Barbara County, CA (February 22, 2019) – Police reported that a CHP officer received injuries in a car accident that took place on Highway 101 Thursday morning, around 7:40 a.m.

The accident happened when a vehicle drove head-on into a patrol vehicle being operated by an officer identified as F. Hernandez.

At the time, Hernandez had been attempting to make a U-turn in the center divider. He had been on call for multiple vehicle collisions on the highway. A Ford F-150 driver lost control of his pickup truck and drove head-on into the officer’s vehicle.

This caused a chain-reaction accident to occur, as the driver behind the F-150 lost control as well. The driver of the Toyota Yaris behind the pickup truck was identified as 25-year-old Virginia Yan.

The officer’s vehicle was pushed and ended up spinning around on the highway due to the accident.

Yan and Officer Hernandez suffered injuries and were taken to the hospital, but they are expected to be okay. An investigation into the accident continues to take place at this time.

We understand that it can be difficult to face the aftermath of a car accident, which is why we would like to take a moment to extend our sincere sympathies to those involved in this accident who suffered serious injuries and wonder what their next steps should be.
