Cuesta Grade, CA – Woman and Child Injured in Major Crash Between SUV and Big Rig on Highway 101

Cuesta Grade, CA  (February 23, 2019) – An accident between a big rig truck and an SUV took place on Wednesday afternoon, leaving an Atascadero woman and child injured.

Shannon Schmidt, 44, was traveling in her 2005 GMC Yukon in the number two lane of southbound Highway 101, south of TV Tower Road, around 3:00 p.m. according to CHP. Schmidt then passed into the number three lane to overcome a slower moving car and smashed into the big rig.

The CHP is not yet aware of what Schmidt’s speed was at the time of the accident.

The big rig was being driven by Eriberto Ramirez Barba, 23, of Santa Maria. He is known to have been going 30 to 35 mph, according to the CHP report.

The immediate striking of the crash made the SUV become impacted under the big rig. The front right passenger was a 9-year-old child, who was able to get out of the SUV despite being wedged under the truck. The child received moderate injuries.

Schmidt suffered serious injuries and had to be pulled from the vehicle. Both she and the child were transported to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center located in San Luis Obispo.

Fortunately, the driver of the big rig, Ramirez Barba was not hurt in the accident.

The crash ended up blocking traffic on the Cuesta Grade, causing the number two and three lanes to close for around two hours.

Our sincerest condolences go out to Shannon Schmidt, her child, Eriberto Ramirez Barba, and any others who were injured in this accident, with the hopes that they will receive full and expeditious recoveries.
