Burney, CA- Forest Service Truck Involved in Head-On Crash on Highway 299

Burney, CA (May 2, 2019)- The California Highway Patrol reported a crash that took place on Highway 299 close to Tamarack Avenue that left 11 people injured. The crash happened at approximately 4:45 pm on Tuesday and involved a U.S. Forest Service firefighting crew’s truck, a 2008 International model service truck.

A 1996 Lexus and the U.S. Forest Service truck struck each other when the Lexus, which was driving east, moved into the opposing lane. This caused the Lexus to hit the westward traveling Forest Service truck head-on. The Forest Service truck subsequently overturned onto the embankment of the highway.

The Lexus driver, 66-year-old McArthur resident Linda L. Corr sustained major injuries and was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Redding.

Two passengers in the truck, 31-year-old Philip Taylor and 28-year-old Patrick Larkin, received major injuries. Taylor was brought to Mercy Medical Center while Larkin was taken to Shasta Regional Medical Center.

The Forest Service truck was transporting a “hotshot” firefighting crew. The truck’s driver, 36-year-old Isaac Obst, as well as other hotshot members Michael Cagle, 27; Andrew Edens, 26; Gris Graves, 33; Stephani Kopfman, 25; and Daniel Robinson, 33 received minor injuries and were taken to St. Elizabeth’s in Red Bluff for medical treatment.

Highway 299 was closed for about two hours in order for an investigation to commence and for removal of the damaged vehicles.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time.  We hope for full recoveries.
