Causes Of Fatal Semi-Truck Accidents In California
5,000 people in passenger vehicles die every year in crashes involving semi-trucks. As well, about 700 individuals in semi-trucks are killed each year. 64 percent of fatal semi-truck accidents contain a semi-truck which was pulling one trailer. 32 percent of the accidents involve single-unit trucks. About 4 percent of incidents involve multi-trailers.
Common causes of semi-truck accidents are:
Driver Fatigue – Often truck drivers are paid based on miles driven, so there is motivation for the truck driver to travel further distances in smaller amounts of time because they will make more money.
Improper Maintenance – Vehicles that are not properly maintained can lead to accidents, including faulty brakes, worn tires, malfunctioning engines, and dangerous trailers.
Distracted Driving – Distracted driving is a serious problem. Truck drivers are particularly susceptible because of the long hours that they spend on the road.
Driver Inexperience – Trucking companies will sometimes pay for new drivers to complete courses and then throw them behind the wheel.
Improper Loading – A cause of an accident can happen due to improperly loading the cargo on the truck.
