Ceres, CA- Man on Motorized Tricycle Killed in Crash with Lexus on Service Rd.
Ceres, CA (April 30, 2019)- The California Highway Patrol reported a deadly crash between the rider of a motorized tricycle and the driver of a Lexus on Sunday at around 8:45 pm.
The crash happened when Yardira Flores, a 32-year-old Ceres resident, and Lexus driver, was driving at around 40 miles per hour east on Service Road near Collins Road. Apparently not seeing the tricycle, the Lexus hit the bike from the rear.
According to reports, the rider hit the Lexus’s windshield after going airborne due to the accident’s impact. The tricyclist was sent over the car’s roof, breaking the sunroof, rolling onto the trunk, and eventually falling to the ground.
The motorized tricyclist died at the crash site. Pending family notification, their identity has not yet been released.
The driver of the Lexus stopped west of Moffet Street on the shoulder of Service Road and cooperated with officials.
An investigation into the crash is underway.
We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased at this time. Our thoughts are with them.
Rear-End Accidents with Bicycles and Motorized Tricycles in California
The League of American Bicyclist’s Every Bicyclist Counts says that bicycles being hit from the rear account for 40% of fatal bike crashes. Crashes with motorized vehicles that function similarly to bicycles– such as adult tricycles– can also result in severe injuries such as brain injuries as well as death.
As commuters seek more environmentally friendly ways of getting around, small motorized vehicles such as motorized tricycles will be an increased presence on the road. Drivers must stay alert for all who share California’s roads.
