How To Avoid A Semi-Truck Collision In California
Commercial trucks are particularly dangerous on the road. If these large vehicles hit a smaller vehicle, the results can be devastating. For this reason, it is important to know how to safely drive around trucks.
Avoid blind spots – Commercial trucks have many more blind spots than other motorists. Stay out of the following areas: the lane on the driver’s side, 20 feet in front of the truck, 30 feet behind the truck, two lanes wide on the right side of the truck. If you can’t see the driver in the truck’s side mirrors, they may not be able to see you as well.
Be cautious when passing – Large trucks don’t stop quickly or maneuver easily, so truck drivers need additional time to adjust their speed.
Clearly signal – Before you pass a commercial truck, always provide clear signals so the truck driver can foresee your actions. Signal sooner than you normally would for a typical vehicle.
Give space – Try to avoid being near a truck for too long. Driving close to a truck puts you at risk of an accident caused by tire blowouts, sudden braking, and high winds. Maintain a following distance of at least four seconds.
Lower brights – Bright headlights reflect off side mirrors and blind truck drivers.
Be careful when merging – Always avoid merging in front of a truck if traffic is slowing to a stop.
Avoid distractions – Distracted driving includes cellphones, food, drink or passengers.
Despite taking the precautions, a negligent truck driver may still cause a serious accident. If you were injured in a truck accident, it is important that you contact a skilled personal injury lawyer as soon as possible.
