Eureka, California – Bicyclist is Killed, One Pedestrian Injured after Fatal Collision with Kenworth Truck at Broadway and Cedar Street
Eureka, California (June 27, 2018) – Local sources reported that a one person died, and one injured as the result of a fatal collision between a bicycle and a 2017 Kenworth truck at the intersection of Broadway and Cedar Streets. The incident took place at approximately 1:34 PM on Thursday, June 21, 2018. Authorities have identified the deceased victim as 37-year old Zachary Herbert. Another victim has been identified as 64-year old Steven Crivelli, who was struck by debris from the accident and survived. Meanwhile, the driver of the Kenworth has been revealed as 55-year old David Alber, who survived the crash and was unharmed.
News reports explained that Zachary Herbert had been riding his bike parallel to Broadway when he approached the intersection at Cedar Street. At the same time, Alber was driving the big rig northbound on West Cedar. Without warning, the Kenworth plowed into the bicycle, sending Herbert flying through the air before crashing in a pullout next to a bus station.
Simultaneously, Steven Crivelli had been inside a bus station at the Cedar/Broadway intersection. When the crash occurred, debris flew across the street and struck Crivelli.
After the accident, Zachary Herbert was transported to St. Joseph Hospital before being taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, where he received treatment for severe injuries. Sadly, despite medical intervention, Herbert succumbed to the trauma and died on June 26.
Meanwhile, Steven Crivelli was also taken to St. Joseph Hospital for treatment. His current condition remains unknown.
David Alber, the truck operator, did not sustain injuries from the crash.
As of now, the investigation is ongoing.
