Fresno County, CA – Two Dead after Brutal Collision Involving Three Semi-Trucks on Northbound Interstate 5

Fresno County, CA (July 17, 2018) – Local news sources reported that an accident involving three semi-trucks took place on the northbound lanes of the Interstate 5 Freeway near Shields Avenue. The incident happened at approximately 5:00 AM in the early morning on Tuesday, July 17, 2018. As of today, authorities have identified one driver as 25-year old Arvin resident Luis Mendez Jr, who tragically died in the fatal accident on Tuesday. Authorities have not released any detailed information concerning the identities of Mendez’s female passenger or the other two truck operators at this time.

According to a report from the California Highway Patrol, a 1998 Freightliner and a 2011 International truck had decreased speed and stopped with backed up traffic on Interstate 5. Without warning, a Peterbilt truck operated by Mendez did not stop in time and, for indeterminate reasons, it slammed into the two stalled trucks. As part of a chain reaction, the Peterbilt crashed into the rear of the Freightliner, which ultimately plowed into the International.

CHP confirmed Mendez and his female passenger were killed as a result of the impact.

At this time, officials have not specified if the other two drivers and any additional passengers had been injured.

As of now, the investigation is ongoing.
