Hemet, CA – Man Killed in Brutal Traffic Accident and Alleged Hit-and-Run on Florida Avenue
Hemet, CA (July 23, 2018) – The Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner recently identified 64-year old Ray Billings as the victim of a fatal pedestrian accident and alleged hit-and-run collision that took place along Florida Avenue. The crash occurred at approximately 9:11 PM at night on Saturday, July 21, 2018. At this time, authorities have not provided any detailed information concerning the identity of the suspected hit-and-run driver.
According to the initial report, Billings was riding a mobility scooter down Florida Avenue, at the Quality Inn in the vicinity of Lyon and Palm Avenues. At the same time, an unidentified vehicle was traveling at high speed in the area when, without warning, it slammed into and ran over Billings. Additional reports confirmed the vehicle dragged the victim for over a hundred feet before Billings’ body was cut in half.
Authorities have also affirmed Billings had been riding in an unmarked crossing zone before the vehicle struck him.
As indicated, the driver did not stop after colliding with the victim and fled on foot, leaving the wrecked vehicle in the center of the road. Initial descriptions outline the suspect as a young black male approximately 20 years in age. Civilians last saw him heading towards the Hemet Valley Mall, and additional witnesses spotted the suspect vehicle more than a mile away from the crash site, near Calle Nogales. Officials confirmed that the suspect’s final destination was Devonshire Avenue, where he attempted to get a new ride. At this point, officers found the suspect and transported him to the Hemet Police Department. No information regarding charges has been disclosed.
