Hercules, CA – Multiple People Injured after Police Pursuit and Resulting Multi-Vehicle Traffic Accident on Interstate 80 Freeway near Willow Avenue Exit
Hercules, CA (September 3, 2018) – A local news source reported that multiple people sustained injuries after a police pursuit involving a CHP motorcycle resulted in a multi-vehicle traffic accident on the Interstate 80 Freeway, in the vicinity of the Willow Avenue exit. The accident occurred at approximately 6:00 PM on Monday, August 27, 2018. At this time, no detailed information concerning the identity of the suspect driver, the police officer, or additional people involved in the crash has been revealed.
Based on the initial report, the incident first took place when a police officer observed a white Hyundai Sonata traveling at a top speed of 90 miles per hour across the westbound lanes of Interstate 80. As the officer began pursuit, the Hyundai appeared to decrease speed to stop. Before halting, however, the unidentified driver hit the accelerator and reentered I-80.
Instantly, the California Highway Patrol officer chased the Hyundai through traffic when, at some point, the larger vehicle swerved across the expanse of I-80. Ultimately, the Hyundai slammed into the right shoulder near Appian Way.
As the Hyundai swerved across the freeway, an oncoming green Jeep Cherokee swerved out of control and careened into multiple vehicles, including the motorcycle ridden by the CHP officer.
Emergency crews confirmed multiple people had been injured, but the exact number of victims and the severity of the injuries were not immediately disclosed.
Law enforcement officials also affirmed the Hyundai driver escaped after the crash.
Presently, the investigation is ongoing.
We extend our most heartfelt prayers and our most loving thoughts to the victims of the crash and wish them swift and efficient recoveries from their injuries.
