Long Beach, CA- Tesla Crash Kills One on I-405 Near Lakewood Blvd

Long Beach, CA (April 17, 2019)- A resident of Hilo, Hawaii was killed in an accident on the 405 Freeway near Lakewood Boulevard on Monday at approximately 9:40 pm.

The California Highway Patrol reported that a 78-year-old San Clemente resident was driving a 2018 Tesla in which Hilo resident Judith M. Blankenship was a passenger. The driver of the Tesla, as well as a 73-year-old San Clemente woman who was the second passenger in the vehicle, were wearing seatbelts. According to the CHP reports, Blankenship was unrestrained.

The crash occurred when the Tesla hit a raised curb after making an unsafe turn. The collision with the concrete curb caused the Tesla to veer into the right shoulder of the road, hitting a parked 2011 Chevrolet.

The force of the crash violently removed the door from the Tesla, causing Blankenship to fall from the car into the No. 5 lane. Subsequently, a 54-year-old woman driving a 2008 BMW hit Blankenship. The crash caused fatal injuries.

The driver and passenger in the Tesla sustained minor injuries in the crash.

The crash is currently under investigation.
