Man Struck and Killed by Hit-and-Run Driver on Highway 78 While Pushing Stalled Vehicle
(June 18, 2018) – According to local news in San Diego, a hit-and-run driver struck and killed a 38-year-old man Sunday night on Highway 78 in Escondido. Reportedly, the victim had stopped to help a 70-year-old driver of a Jeep Cherokee SUV that had stalled along Highway 78. The accident occurred around 11:00 p.m. last night close to the intersection of Broadway.
Apparently, several people had stopped to assist a family whose vehicle stalled on Highway 78 eastbound. The family was reportedly off the roadway while the owner of the stalled Jeep was steering. The victim was pushing the Jeep from behind when he was struck and killed. The accident took place when a 17-year-old crashed his Toyota RAV4 into a stopped Nissan Frontier, subsequently pushing the Frontier into the victim.
Paramedics arrived on the scene and immediately transported two men to the hospital. The driver of the Jeep reportedly suffered serious head trauma, while the good Samaritan tragically passed away from his injuries at the hospital. The teenage driver who caused the accident left the scene of the crash but was later picked up by California Highway Patrol. The young man was charged with DUI, while a search of his vehicle turned up drugs, drug paraphernalia, and a loaded handgun.
