Mendocino County, CA – Head-on Collision Injures Several on Hwy 101

Hopland, CA (April 4, 2019) – Police responded to the scene of a head-on collision that took place on Wednesday morning on the green bridge on Highway 101 around 11:04 a.m.

One of the drivers who allegedly caused the accident was arrested on DUI charges and has since been identified as 65-year-old Carroll Johnson of Eureka who was driving without a license.

Johnson was heavily intoxicated by alcohol and drugs when he got into his Chevy SUV and drove.  He was traveling down Hwy 101 when he suddenly went over the double yellow lines and struck a southbound Ford Mustang head-on that was driven by 24-year-old Kip Ford.

Johnson’s SUV landed on its side with the back end of the vehicle hanging off the side of the bridge above the Russian River.  Both of the people in that vehicle require extrication from the vehicle as it dangled.  The passenger in that vehicle identified as 30-year-old Amber Young was seriously injured and was transported by air ambulance to Santa Rosa Hospital for treatment.  The driver of the Chevy was also taken by air ambulance to Queen of the Valley Hospital with serious injuries.

Kip Ford was lucky to only have suffered minored injuries and was taken to Adventist Health Ukiah Valley Hospital.  His passenger, 19-year-old Jennifer Ramirez, was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with major injuries.

The vehicles completely blocked the roadway and police had to divert traffic onto Old River Road due to the severe damages.

Johnson has since been arrested for DUI. Police continue their investigation into the accident at this time.
