Merced, California – Suspected Hit-and-Run Accident on R Street Claims Skateboarder’s Life
Merced, California (July 9, 2018) – Merced local news sources reported that a brutal accident and suspected hit-and-run involving a skateboarder took place in the 2000 block of R Street. The incident occurred at some time after midnight on Thursday, July 5, 2018. Authorities have identified the victim as 31-year old Merced resident Joseph Baker. Meanwhile, the hit-and-run culprit has been revealed to be 24-year old Rayawana Vance, also a resident of Merced.
According to the report, Baker and a friend were skateboarding to a nearby 7-Eleven. While riding down R Street, Baker was sideswiped by a passing 2010 Dodge Avenger, driven by Vance.
As a result of the impact, Baker sustained severe trauma to the head and legs and was transported to a nearby medical center for additional treatment. Personnel have reported him to be in critical condition.
As indicated, Vance did not stop to render aid to Baker and fled the crash site. After the accident, Vance contacted law enforcement and was arrested on charges of causing a hit-and-run and operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s license. Afterward, Vance posted bail and was released by law enforcement.
