Merced County, CA – Three People Severely Injured after Terrible Traffic Accident and Suspected DUI on Highway 99 near Shanks Road
Merced County, CA (July 29, 2018) – A Merced local news source reported that three people, including a child, sustained severe injuries as the result of a deadly traffic accident and suspected DUI collision that took place on Highway 99, in the vicinity of Shanks Road. As of now, the California Highway Patrol identified the victims as Jesus Venegas Vargas, 32-year old Brenda Torres, and a 7-year old child. Likewise, officials revealed the DUI culprit to be 20-year old Shayla Gardenia Jaimes, of Delhi.
According to the reports, Jaimes had been driving a 2009 Toyota Corolla on the wrong-way down northbound Highway 99. While traveling in the south lanes, Jaimes plowed into the side of a 1998 Dodge Durango before crashing into the front of a 2007 Nissan Altima, occupied by Vargas, Torres, and the boy. As a result of the multi-vehicle crash, the Corolla and the Altima slid out of control and slammed into the center of the road.
Later, officials confirmed that Vargas had been taken to Memorial Medical Center, where he received treatment for injuries to his ribs. Meanwhile, Torres was transported to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto for treatment of a fractured leg.
CHP also indicated the 7-year old boy, reported to be Vargas’ son, was brought to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera, where the juvenile victim received treatment for cuts on his face and a fractured jaw.
At the same time, Jaimes suffered a breakage to her pelvis. Authorities plan to arrest the suspect on charges of DUI once her treatment has concluded.
Presently, law enforcement officials are still investigating the incident.
