Modesto, CA – 41-Year-Old Man Killed In Two-Car Highway 99 Crash

Modesto, CA (March 2, 2019) – Wet weather was one factor in a two-car crash that resulted in the death of one man on Highway 99 that occurred Saturday, March 2, at 8:42 a.m.

According to the California Highway Patrol a Toyota Prius, driven by a 27-year-old man from Ceres, identified as A. Morfin, was driving northbound on Highway 99, near Hatch Road.

Simultaneously, a Chevrolet Silverado, being driven by an unnamed 41-year-old man from Turlock, was traveling northbound in the middle lane. His identity is not being released, pending family notification.

Morfin was driving at around 60 mph. He turned his vehicle to the right when driving through standing water that was on the freeway.

His turn caused the right-front of his car to hit the left-rear of the Chevrolet Silverado. The truck traveled to the right after the crash, rotated, and then hit a raised curb and turned over as it went through a chain-link fence.

The driver of the Silverado was killed as a result of this accident. Morfin and his 25-year-old male passenger, identified as K. Valdez, of Ceres, were not hurt in the accident.

We would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the victim of this tragic accident, and wish them strength during this difficult time.

If the Weather is Bad, Who is at Fault for the Car Accident?

Each driver has a responsibility to other cars on the road. It is necessary to maintain control of your vehicle to avoid a collision. The key to a bad weather car accident is to prove that the driver failed to maintain control due to negligence rather than the weather. Drivers must exercise a higher level of care which is appropriate for the driving conditions. In other words, you have to drive more carefully when the weather is bad.

For example, if light rain is coming down and the roadway is not very wet, you can drive at the posted speed limit. However, if it is raining hard causing water issues and lessening visibility, you should always reduce speed. The speed limit on any road is for optimal road and weather conditions only. If conditions change, a driver needs to adjust accordingly. Therefore, if a driver collides with another car in rainy weather, that driver may still be held liable.
