Santa Barbara County, CA – Multi-Car Crash Involving CHP Vehicle on Highway 101

Santa Barbara County, CA (Feb 24, 2019) – On Thursday morning, a multi-vehicle crash took place on Highway 101 north of the Highway 1 offramp near Las Cruces, leaving multiple lanes temporarily shut down.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a CHP officer was driving to help with multiple traffic collisions on the southbound side of Highway 101 around 7:45 a.m.

The officer was attempting to make a U-turn in the center divider when a Ford F-250 that was driving southbound lost control. The male driver nearly hit the CHP vehicle but managed to end up missing the officer. However, a Toyota Yaris was that was driving behind the F-250 lost control, crossing into the center median and hitting the front of the CHP vehicle.

According to CHP, both drivers were driving at dangerous speeds.

The F-250 stopped its journey on the shoulder of the northbound side of Highway 101. It did not hit any vehicles. The Yaris stopped, blocking the left lane on the southbound side of the freeway.

The crash took place near the center divider, so the far left lane on each side was shut down for an extended period.

Both the CHP officer and the driver of the Yaris suffered injuries. The investigation on the crash is pending.

Liability in Multi-Vehicle Car Accidents

Usually, the driver whose negligence caused the accident is known as being responsible for the crash. However, determining the fault in a multiple-vehicle accident requires an exhaustive investigation and can depend on many factors. Two drivers may even share fault for the crash, depending on what happened.

Several different factors determine who is liable for damages or injuries from an automobile accident. The decision of who pays for damages or injuries in car accidents rests on who is at fault. However, when you are involved in a multi-car accident it may be unclear who is at fault at first. And if there are injuries things get even murkier. That’s when you should seek legal advice.

It comes down to who actually caused the accident. Determining who is at fault can be decided by asking all of the drivers involved what happened. The fault in an accident may be separated between two or more of the drivers involved. In this situation, the amount of fault will be determined by the police report.

If you are injured in a multi-car crash you need to seek out the advice of a personal injury attorney. You may be able to seek compensation for any injuries incurred in the accident.
