Newhall, CA – Pedestrian Killed on 14 Freeway Near Golden Valley Rd

Newhall, CA (April 13, 2019) – According to the California Highway Patrol, a pedestrian was fatally struck after walking northbound on the 14 Freeway.

CHP received a call at about 9:19 p.m. on Friday, April 12 that there was a man in his 60’s walking northbound on the right shoulder of the 14 Freeway south of Golden Valley Road.

20 minutes later, CHP received another call that the man was now walking in the slow lane. Then, right after 9:50 p.m., a 25-year-old man who was driving a 2002 Honda Accord was moving northbound on the 14 Freeway As he was heading onto the Golden Valley off-ramp the pedestrian began going across the off-ramp. The driver attempted to steer towards the left, but he was unable to do so and the pedestrian was struck.

First responders came to the scene, but the pedestrian passed away as a result of the injuries he suffered in the crash.

All traffic lanes in the northbound 14 Freeway were shut down but have since been reopened. The identity of the pedestrian has not been identified, and investigations are ongoing.

We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the victim who passed away as a result of this fatal accident. Our thoughts are with them at this time.

Pedestrian Accidents in California

Even though pedestrians usually have the right-of-way, there are times where they can be liable for a car accident.

If the pedestrian is totally to blame for the crash, the driver may actually be able to sue them for recourse for any damage caused to the car, or for injuries to the driver. However, even if a pedestrian does shoulder some blame, there is a strong chance that the driver of the vehicle is also partially at fault.

Basically, everyone – driver or pedestrian – is expected to exercise a reasonable level of care such as obeying traffic laws and the “rules of the road.” So, if a pedestrian fails to do this, and that causes a car accident, the pedestrian is considered at fault.
