Oakland, CA – 14-Year-Old Critically Injured in Bicycle Accident at Intersection
Oakland, CA (January 29, 2019) – Police responded to a bicycle accident this month that caused the 14-year-old cyclist to become critically injured at a local intersection. The accident took place when the cyclist was struck by 36-year-old Leah Conner, who then fled the scene of the accident.
Police were originally called to the scene of the accident at the intersection of 35th Avenue and San Leandro Street. At the time, police say that Conner was already on probation and facing felony charges related to other convictions. However, she has now been arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of an accident.
The teen had been riding a bicycle when he was struck by Conner’s vehicle while approaching the intersection. The teen was stuck underneath the vehicle and dragged four blocks until Conner stopped. Conner knew that the teen had become lodged under her vehicle but continued to drive, trying multiple times to ditch the teenager on the road.
Witnesses said that Conner and her passenger got out of their vehicle in a private driveway and looked at the victim, but then got back in and fled the scene. When paramedics arrived at the scene, they found the teen in critical condition and took him to the hospital where he was treated for broken bones and internal injuries.
Police found Conner several hours later and made their arrest. The investigation into the matter continues at this time.
We would like to extend our sincerest sympathies to the cyclist who was injured in this accident. We understand how difficult it must be to face the aftermath of this accident and we would like to extend our warmest prayers.
