Oakland, CA – CHP Identifies Drive Killed during Violent Pedestrian Accident and DUI Incident along Northbound Interstate 880 near 66th Avenue

Oakland, CA (August 13, 2018) – The California Highway Patrol has provided updated information concerning the driver who died as the result of a violent pedestrian accident and a DUI incident that transpired along the northbound lanes of Interstate 880, in the vicinity of 66th Avenue. Officers first documented the collision at approximately 2:24 AM in the morning on Sunday, August 12, 2018. As of today, authorities have identified the deceased victim as 19-year old Jesaun Benson-Garrett and the suspect driver as 56-year old Berkeley resident Maury Butler.

As CHP officers reported, Benson-Garrett had left a vehicle after an accident involving two vehicles occurred on Interstate 880. At the same time, Butler was driving a white Lexus sedan along the same roadway when, without warning, he plowed into Benson-Garrett.

Officers sadly reported that Benson-Garrett died during the impact.

Meanwhile, police forced Butler to stop after the collision with the pedestrian and found he had been operating the Lexus while under the influence. Authorities also discovered the motorist’s license had previously been suspended.

Presently, an investigation into the crash is ongoing.
