Oceanside, CA- Amtrak Crash Kills Pedestrian Near Cassidy St. and South Coast Hwy
Oceanside, CA (April 17, 2019)- An Amtrak train struck and killed a woman around noon on Tuesday near Cassidy Street and South Coast Highway.
Jason Burk of the Sheriff’s Department Transit Enforcement Unit reported that the train operator blew the train’s horn and began emergency braking when the pedestrian was observed on the tracks. Unfortunately, the train was unable to stop, causing it to hit the pedestrian. She died at the scene of fatal injuries.
The train was moving at a speed between 65 and 70 mph at the time.
Details about whether or not the pedestrian heard the horn or attempted to move off the tracks are not available.
The Sheriff’s Department is asking anyone with information about this crash to call their nonemergency number at 858-565-5200.
We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased as they go through this difficult time.
When Trains Hit Pedestrians in California
Operation Lifesaver, an advisory council that educates the public about train crashes, noted that 123 pedestrians were killed on train tracks in California in 2018. Shockingly, California came in first among all US states for most pedestrian-train track deaths in 2018; Texas, the state that ranked second, had only 36 pedestrian-train track deaths in 2018.
A pedestrian has virtually no way of surviving a collision with a train. If someone you love has lost their life in a train accident, consult the accomplished accident lawyers at the Brady Law Group.
