Oceanside, CA – Driver Dies duriing Two-Vehicle Collision on Mission Avenue near Fireside Street and El Camino Real

Oceanside, CA (August 6, 2018) – A San Diego local news source reported that a driver died as the result of a brutal traffic accident and suspected hit-and-run incident that took place on Mission Avenue last week. The incident happened at approximately 9:45 PM on Tuesday, July 31, 2018. Authorities have identified the deceased victim as 22-year old Oceanside resident Rufus Lucas and the suspect driver as 29-year old Rijal Blueberries St. Michel.

Based on the original report from Oceanside Police, St. Michel had been driving a 1995 Toyota Camry along Mission Avenue when he began swerving across the eastbound and westbound lanes before attempting to execute a U-turn. As he attempted the move, St. Michel collided with an oncoming Toyota Echo operated by Lucas.

Ultimately, Lucas’ vehicle spun out of control and overturned, eventually coming to a halt on eastbound Mission, near Fireside Street and El Camino Real. Authorities confirmed Lucas was killed as a direct result of the impact.

Meanwhile, police revealed that St. Michel briefly remained at the scene before trying to flee. Officers later arrested the culprit and sent him to Vista Detention Center at some time on Sunday, August 5, 2018. As of today, St. Michel has been detained on a $1 million bail for counts of felony hit-and-run, vehicular manslaughter resulting in injury and death, and negligence.
