Pedestrians In Wheelchairs Are At Increased Risk Of Car Accidents In California
Pedestrians in wheelchairs have a much higher risk of being in accidents than their walking counterparts. Pedestrians in wheelchairs who were struck had a 36 percent higher fatality rate than non-wheelchair using pedestrians.
Motorists are increasingly driving unsafely with cell phone use and other distractions and they are less likely to see a person in a wheelchair. This is because the wheelchair user has a lower profile and is more difficult to see rather than an adult of average height. In addition, it can take an individual in a wheelchair longer to get across the street in a crosswalk than it might take a person running across.
There a number of ways you can stay safe as a pedestrian in a wheelchair.
- Travel only within the crosswalk when crossing a roadway and only cross with the full walk signal illuminated
- Crossing when the second hand is counting down or against a Do Not Walk signal is unwise
- Make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you
