Salinas CA- Arrest Made in Fatal Crash on Alisal Rd.
Salinas, CA (April 5, 2019)- An 18-year-old high school student has been arrested for a deadly crash that took place in Salinas around midnight on Saturday morning, April 30.
The incident occurred when a Monterey County Sheriff deputy noticed two cars driving erratically on Williams Road and Bardin Road. When he attempted to pull Ivan Sepulveda over, Sepulveda evaded police and continued driving. The other vehicle did stop and pull over for the deputies.
Sepulveda continued to drive his 2011 Lexus south on Bardin Road, turning onto Alisal Road as the deputy’s vehicle followed. Police reported that the Lexus was driving over 100 miles during the chase. As Sepulveda drew near to Hartnell Road, he crashed into a pole and was thrown from the car.
Emergency medical personnel transported Sepulveda to Natividad Medical Center, where he died after sustaining serious injuries. A 17-year-old passenger in the Lexus received minor injuries.
According to police, Sepulveda was not wearing his seatbelt, though the passenger did have his seatbelt on.
It is currently unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved in this crash.
Sepulveda was a senior at Alisal High School.
We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the Sepulveda family at this time.
Speeding in California
Speeding is a significant issue in California’s automobile deaths. The California Office of Traffic Safety noted in a 2017 report that fatalities in car crashes in California had risen from 898 fatalities caused by speeding in 2011 to 1,056 fatalities in 2016.
Speeding not only endangers those in other vehicles, but the driver who speeds is also at high risk for crashing. Passengers in speeding vehicles are at risk for speeding-related injuries and fatality, as well.
