What To Do and Not Do Following a Drunk Driving Crash

Here are suggestions about what to do and not do if you or a family member is involved in a truck or car accident caused by a drunk driver. It is always better for a car accident attorney to handle these matters which is why hiring a lawyer soon after the crash is the best advice.

When your vehicle has come to a rest, try to stay calm and take stock of the situation. If anyone is injured, call 911 to get assistance from emergency crews.

The crash scene can be dangerous in and of itself as vehicles can be struck again by other cars traveling in the area. Secondary collisions are very common and can often be more dangerous than the first crash. Because of this, no one should ever be standing between the two damaged vehicles. Other hazards include car fires and the collapse of property damaged due to the crash. However, make sure to not leave the scene of the traffic accident unless there is a substantial risk to your safety.

It is also vital that the police be notified about the incident immediately at the scene so they can determine how the impaired driver caused the crash. Police are can perform field sobriety tests, conduct breathalyzers, or even take the suspect in for a blood or urine test.

Any drunk driving victim should seek medical treatment right after leaving the scene of the accident.
