San Bernardino, CA – Pregnant Woman Tragically Dies in Brutal Accident near Highland Avenue and Medical Center Drive
San Bernardino, CA (July 12, 2018) – Local news sources reported that a pregnant woman had died in a tragic accident that took place near Highland Avenue and Medical Center Drive. The incident occurred at approximately 11:40 PM on July 11, 2018. At this time, authorities have identified the culprit as 31-year old Mercedes Vanesa Guevara, who has been taken into police custody and potentially faces charges of vehicular manslaughter. Officials had recently identified the deceased victims as Maribel Gonzalez and her unborn child.
Based on the reports, Maribel Gonzalez had entered a crosswalk on West Highland Avenue and had the green light to walk. At the same time, Guevara was driving a Dodge Charger in the vicinity and, for indeterminate reasons, plowed into Gonzalez as she attempted to cross the street. Reports indicate Gonzalez flew 150 feet down the road as a result of the impact. Simultaneously, Guevara completely lost control of the Dodge and crashed in an undisclosed location on the road.
Rescue teams sadly pronounced Gonzalez and her child dead at the crash site.
After the second collision, Guevara had changed vehicles and fled the scene.
