San Diego, CA – Wrong Way Driver on 805 Freeway Near 8 Freeway Dies, Injures 2
San Diego, CA (March 18, 2019) – A wrong-way driver in a Mitsubishi Lancer going north in the southbound lanes of Interstate 805 Freeway, close to the Interstate 8 connector, crashed into a Toyota Sienna van around 3:00 a.m. Saturday.
The California Highway Patrol reported that, after, a Kia Soul collided with the two cars involved in the original crash. Due to the impact, the minivan burst into flames, which then engulfed the Kia and the Mitsubishi.
Both the driver of Mitsubishi and the Toyota minivan experienced life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Mitsubishi died soon after the crash.
The CHP does not know what caused the wrong-way driver to drive northward in the southbound lanes. An investigation into the cause is ongoing.
Our sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased. Our thoughts are with them during this troubling time.
“Move Over” on the Freeway
When encountering flashing lights on emergency vehicles, CalTrans vehicles, and tow trucks on the side of a California freeway, motorists must move to the next lane, leaving one lane’s space between them and the lighted vehicles. If moving to another lane is not possible, the drivers must slow down to a low speed.
This law exists because the scene of accidents can become even more dangerous if drivers collide with emergency workers or injured people being treated at the scene.
