Santa Cruz, CA – Major Injury Crash on La Fonda Ave Under Investigation
Santa Cruz, CA (March 17, 2019) – A major injury collision involving an unlicensed driver occurred on March 15th that sent four female students from Harbor High School to be transported to the hospital.
CHP reported that the crash occurred on Friday morning, just before 11:00 a.m., near the school’s campus in the 300 block of La Fonda Avenue.
The 17-year-old driver was behind the wheel with the other three other teenagers in a maroon Nissan 350Z Roadster. The driver then lost control of her automobile, which was actually made for two people.
Police stated that the car veered to the left side of the street, hit a parked minivan, and sideswiped a parked truck. The car then moved to the opposite side of the road and hit into another parked van.
One of the passengers was airlifted to a Bay Area hospital. She is currently in stable condition. The other girls were transported to a local hospital for minor injuries and are expected to make a full recovery.
La Fonda and Soquel Avenues were closed for several hours after the accident but have since reopened.
The collision is still under investigation.
We send our wishes for a speedy recovery to the persons injured in this accident.
Unlicensed Driver Related Accidents
According to CHP, unlicensed drivers are involved in up to 5% of fatal crashes and unlicensed motorcyclists are involved in up to 30%. One of the issues in an accident with an unlicensed driver is that the insurance company of the car the driver is occupying is unlikely to pay liability for property damage. This means any liability needs to be paid for by the unlicensed driver themselves. Considering that many unlicensed drivers may underage or not have the money to pay for the damage to your vehicle, recovering the money can be difficult.
