Santa Cruz County, CA – Fatal Pedestrian Crash on Highway 1
Santa Cruz County, CA (January 2, 2018) On the 31st of December, a fatal pedestrian crash happened on Highway 1. According to the reports, a California Highway Patrol car pulled over to help a man whose car broke down on the side of the roadway. As they were about to assess whether or not the driver had been drinking, he ran across the southbound lanes and crossed into the median onto the northbound freeway. Unfortunately, that’s when an oncoming vehicle struck him. When the paramedics arrived to help, they found the man dead at the scene. Crews shut down the freeway as they cleared the lanes and investigated the crash site.
We send our condolences to the deceased victim’s family as we know how hard it is to lose a loved one. We hope they gather the strength to overcome this difficult time.
Pedestrian Accidents in California
Unfortunately, studies show that California is one of the top four states that hold the most pedestrian fatalities. This comes as no surprise since studies also show that most pedestrian fatalities occur in states that are largely populated and have large metro areas. There are many reasons why pedestrians lose their lives, with the most popular reason being distracted driving. However, there are some cases where pedestrians put themselves at risk of being seriously injured or killed.
The police are currently determining if the driver responsible will be held fully or partially liable since the pedestrian did ran into the middle of a highway at night. Depending on what they conclude, the deceased victim’s family may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit with the help of a California wrongful death attorney.
