Snelling, CA- Pickup Truck Hits Pedestrian at Hwy 59 and 4th St
Snelling, CA (May 28, 2019)- Highway 59 and 4th Street in Snelling was the site of a pedestrian accident on Friday at approximately 3:40 pm that left a 15-year-old with a major injury.
According to reports, the victim and his grandfather were walking east on Highway 59. The grandfather crossed the highway, and the teenager ran across the highway to catch up with him.
46-year-old San Jose resident Edwin Melo was driving a 2015 GMC Sierra, which he slowed to approximately 20 miles per hour when he saw the grandfather crossing the highway. The teenager reportedly ran out and surprised the truck driver, who subsequently hit the teenager.
The victim sustained a broken leg and was taken by air ambulance to a hospital for treatment.
Alcohol or other substances are not considered factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and his family at this time. We hope for a full recovery.
When Pedestrians are Hurt in California
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 858 pedestrians died due to vehicle crashes in California in 2017. Shockingly, that number means that over two people per 100,000 Californians were killed in pedestrian accidents that year.
Due to the enormous size, weight, and speed difference between cars and pedestrians, few pedestrians escape a vehicle accident without injuries varying from minor to deadly.
