High Speed Crashes in California
Speeding is one of the top factors in causing car accidents. Speeding was involved in at least 30% of fatal auto accidents nationwide. Speed also helps determine liability in auto accidents. When a driver exceeds the established speed limit they are taking on legal responsibility.
In most cases, speed limits on California’s highways and freeways fall under the State’s Maximum Speed Limit. That’s 55 mph, 65 mph, or 70 mph depending on what kind of road it is and the area where it passes.
While many of these at-fault drivers are moving above the posted limit at the time of the accident, many more are travel too fast for road and traffic conditions. If you’ve been injured at the hands of one of these reckless drivers, you may be protected by California’s Basic Speed Law. What this law means is that drivers are required to drive at a safe speed in any and all travel situations. That “safe speed” may be far below the posted speed limit.
